Sand it

To get a professional look you are going to need to do some sanding, whether you are sanding in order to prep for paint or you are getting rid of those sharp edges.

When it comes to sanding, we like to use a belt sander or random orbital sander for the job. Both get the job done quickly and effectively. On occasion it will be necessary to use a sanding block or sandpaper by hand for those tough to reach places. Whatever process you use make sure you are using the correct grit.

When picking the grit of sandpaper used you will only need 80 grit to 220 grit sandpaper. Anything coarser can easily damage the wood by sanding through the layers. Anything finer than the listed, will not contribute much. For sanding down edges or any imperfections you should use 80 – 120 grit sandpaper. To prep for paint and staining use a 180-grit sandpaper, this will scuff up surface and allow for a good adhesion. You should also go over the edges aging with this grit to further smooth them. If you decided to do a stain and apply a second coat of finish than in between you may scuff up the first layer with a 220 grit so the second layer lays better.

When sanding always try to sand along the grain. If you do cross grain it may show in the final work, this is especially true when it comes to staining.

For the belt sander there are some precautions to be taken due to its power. It can be used incorrectly and mess up your work. When using a belt sander let the sander do the work, do not force it. If you force it, you can cause gouges. Use it in a up, down motion for each pass and examine what you just went over after you performed the up down. Our top pick for belt sanders is the Makita 9403 Belt sander.

A random orbital sander works well and get the job done efficiently. Since it does random orbits to sand it will not leave noticeable marks like a regular palm sander might if used incorrectly. It is nice because you can sand in any direction. This can make some of those tighter areas easier to reach without worrying about going against the grain. Our top pick is DEWALT Random Orbital Sander.

However you are sanding make sure you are using the right grit and if you change the grit make sure you clean your work surface before applying the next grit. This will save your sandpaper and make for a cleaner more professional job.
