Get to know the Pros
“Creation is a better means of self-expression than possession; it is through creating, not possessing, that life is revealed.”
— Vida D. Scudder
Created by climbers at a climbing gym in Amarillo TX, USA. The walls were nothing special and provided some angle changes but nothing like the construction of other gyms. They were not even textured, just some paint that the previous owners stuck on the walls. As climbers, it was hard to say that the poor quality mattered due to the lack of climbing in the area. With a canyon full of chossy rock and the next set of decent climbing areas a long drive away, this is what we called home.
After visiting several other gyms and climbing some of their stuff, we liked their use of volumes. We decided to embark on the journey of making them ourselves. At first they were simple and sub-par, but they worked. After buying a few different volumes we started to upgrade the way we made ours. We did better but still had room for improvement. Lucky, we found some guidance from a wood working friend who climbed with us. His specialty furniture, basically volumes (furniture for climbing on). He provided us with some mentoring and helped us improve. We helped him better his climbing by climbing with him and setting new stuff with the “climbable furniture” volumes.
The Improvements were not over; we dove deep into research to discover what would make the best volumes and found great results. After testing the research, we created some awesome volume ideas. This, along with reaching out to a professional who could provide us with the plans, helped us create such amazing volumes in half the amount of time.
With these results we decided that sharing this information was our duty to the climbing community. We made it easy for individuals to make volumes themselves by creating Provolumes.
We still work with our pro volume designer to keep creating new volumes to transform our gym and want to provide the same opportunity for others. We want to continue making volumes to improve our techniques and provide that information to our users.
We encourage you to contact us at proclimbingvolume@gmail.com with pictures of your creations, anything we could do to improve, or if you have any questions.
